Brown Rice & Lentils Kitchari Recipe

A modified version of the more traditional Kitchari recipe, which uses brown rice & lentils instead of dhal and basmati rice.


  • 1 cup brown rice & lentils mix [about 2/3 rice to 1/3 brown lentils]
  • 1/2 inch fresh ginger root
  • 1 tsp ghee or butter
  • Small handful coriander or cilantro leaves
  • salt to taste
  • 2 1/2 cups water

Kitchari Spice Mix

I usually mic up a large batch and keep it in a sealed glass container for ease of use.

  • 1/4 t tumeric
  • 1/4 t coriander powder
  • 1/4 t cumin powder
  • 1/4 t cumin seeds
  • 1/4 t mustard seeds
  • Pinch of hing

Options: Coriander Seed


  • Saute the Kitchari Spice Mix together with ghee or butter in your usual rice pot and cook for a few minutes
  • Add brown rice & lentils mix to pot
  • Add salt to taste
  • Add water and leave lid uncovered till mix boils
  • Turn heat down, cover pot and cook covered until it softens
  • Add coriander/cilantro leaves before serving

makes 2 servings   I usually add things like roughly chopped tomato, feta, etc to flesh out the rice
